Should a customer express concern over the alarm LED not flashing when the alarm system has been activated, this can be caused by a faulty operating cam on the tailgate lock cylinder. The function of the operating cam can be checked as follows. Ensure that the vehicle is unlocked and the igntion is switched off. Open the hood, and press the hood ajar switch six times within 8 seconds in order to activate the self-test. Restrain the tailgate to prevent it from opening and unlock the tailgate. On turning the key, the alarm horn should `beep' once. Allow the tailgate to open and the alarm horn should emit a second `beep'. If the first `beep' does not occur then the operating cam should be renewed.
µ 1. Remove the tailgate lock cylinder (refer to the Escort '95 Service Microfiche, Operation No. 41 664 0).
2. Remove the switch (Fig. 1. 1).
3. Remove the retaining ring (Fig. 1. 2).
4. Remove the actuating lever (Fig. 1. 3).
5. Renew the operating cam (Fig. 1. 4) (see Parts Required), and follow steps 1-4 in reverse order to assemble the lock cylinder.
6. Fit the lock cylinder.
